Ways to Win and Paylines: Reading Two Matching Systems

By Reel Margins Editorial Desk · Published · Sources checked 2026-11-02

Paylines define specified paths through a grid, while ways-to-win rules commonly count eligible matching positions across adjacent reels. The number printed beside either label is not a win probability or a return percentage. To understand a paytable, read the matching direction, minimum combination and active configuration before interpreting the count.

Short answer: lines are drawn paths, ways are adjacency counts

A path and a combination count organise symbol evaluation differently. A fixed payline identifies positions along a particular route. A ways system evaluates eligible matching positions across reels according to its rules, without requiring each counted combination to follow a separately drawn zigzag path. The exact direction and exceptions still need the product’s written explanation.

Official terminology is not always tidy. JILI’s checked product page places a ways value in a field labelled Paylines, while the PG SOFT document has a paytable heading that names ways. These are useful examples of why the surrounding definition matters more than treating a field caption as a universal technical standard. We cite the wording without turning this article into either game’s review.

Keep three ideas separate: where symbols appear, which arrangements qualify and what a qualifying arrangement awards. A grid drawing answers the first question. A line diagram or ways definition helps answer the second. A paytable and its conditions answer the third. None of those pieces should silently replace the others.

How a fixed payline is read

A fixed line is read as a specified sequence of positions across the grid. A straight line and a zigzag line may each be one path, even though they touch different rows. The number attached to a line identifies that path within the game’s own diagram; it does not state how many matching symbols appeared or how much a result pays.

Left-to-right rule

Direction must be confirmed rather than assumed. A left-to-right example begins at the leftmost eligible reel and follows the defined path, but another product may describe a different direction or separate exception. Read the actual sentence governing matches. A line drawing by itself cannot establish whether a combination may begin in the middle or whether special symbols change the rule.

In a hypothetical diagram, trace a single path with a finger and identify one position per reel. Then ask whether the displayed symbols meet the documented minimum and symbol conditions. This is a reading exercise, not an actual winning arrangement. No product payout or probability is attached to the abstract blocks in our illustrations.

Line numbering in a paytable

Line numbers are navigation aids inside the relevant paytable. A label such as line A or line B in an editorial sketch is simply a way to distinguish paths; it is not a copied product identifier. When transcribing an official line diagram, preserve its own numbering and any note explaining whether all paths are always active.

Do not confuse a numbered path with a bet setting. Some products may show many lines while offering a different set of adjustable controls. The existence of a line diagram does not establish that each path can be switched on or off. That question belongs to the product’s controls and bet-level notes.

How ways are counted

A ways count follows the eligible positions on adjacent reels under the stated matching rule. The important words are “eligible” and “adjacent”: not every symbol anywhere on the screen necessarily participates. A ways badge does not mean that symbols separated by an unrelated reel qualify together, or that the usual symbol requirements have disappeared.

Adjacent-reel rule

First identify the starting reel and minimum matching length. Then determine which symbols qualify on each consecutive reel and how special symbols are treated. Those conditions decide whether the positions can contribute to a counted combination. A plain product-page badge is usually too brief to answer every one of these questions, so consult the detailed rule material.

A symbol on a later reel cannot simply be counted as adjacent if the required intermediate reel does not qualify. Likewise, a special symbol might substitute under one condition and be excluded under another. Do not replace those conditions with the vague phrase “anywhere wins”. That phrase can erase the central structure the article is trying to explain.

Why the number changes with grid size

In a purely arithmetic example, five reels with three eligible positions each give 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243 possible full-length position choices. This is multiplication of positions, not a product’s payout calculation. It does not say that all those choices are winning, equally likely or independent. No actual game’s return or multiplier is inferred from it.

If the number of eligible positions changes, the product of those position counts changes too. That explains the arithmetic behind a variable maximum, but it does not identify the configuration of an unverified game. A real rule must still specify which positions count, the required symbol match and how overlapping awards are handled.

Five columns each contain three distinct symbols above the arithmetic 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 243.

Reading both on the same paytable screen

Read labels as part of the same rule system rather than adding every displayed number together. A product may use a familiar field caption, a ways heading and separate special-symbol rules. The checked JILI and PG sources show why an editor should retain the literal wording and consult the fuller context before assigning a category.

Record the label, the definition and the conditions in separate notes. If a short product page and a detailed rules document appear inconsistent, preserve both identities and versions. The discrepancy remains unresolved until appropriate official material explains it [待核實]. Do not resolve it by choosing whichever term produces the larger headline number.

Common wording traps

A large count does not, by itself, demonstrate a better return or a more favourable personal outcome. The UK regulator’s monitoring guide treats return as a measurement involving wins and turnover and discusses the amount of play and variation. It does not define return as the number of drawn paths or available position combinations. This foreign technical reference is not Philippine law.

All ways vs 243 ways

“All ways” needs a definition of which positions and reel sequences are eligible. “243 ways” supplies a count but still leaves symbol rules and configuration to be checked. Neither phrase means every visible layout wins. Avoid translating a maximum count into an everyday statement such as “243 chances on every spin” without a precise, supported explanation.

Lines shown but not selectable

A screen can describe lines without offering a separate control for each one. Inspect the actual settings and written bet basis before explaining what a user can change. We did not test a product’s controls for this guide, so a generic diagram must not be presented as evidence of selectable line settings.

Checklist before trusting a label

Confirm the product and document, locate the matching direction, read the minimum symbol condition, identify active positions and check the bet basis. Then keep the combination count separate from any award or return statement. If one of those answers is missing, leave that detail unverified rather than treating an attractive badge as a complete mathematical description.

Questions and answers

Is 243 ways better than 20 paylines?

Those labels count different structures. Their numbers alone do not establish a higher return, lower risk or better personal outcome.

Games | JILI Games GAME COVER Live return to player performance monitoring of games of chance - How to calculate return to player (RTP)

Can I choose the number of ways?

Only if the specific game’s rules and controls allow it. A displayed count is not automatically a selectable setting.

Does ways-to-win change the RTP?

The count alone does not determine the return. A full game model includes symbol frequencies, award rules and other conditions; this article provides no product return comparison.

Why do some grids say up to a number of ways?

The wording may describe a maximum under a changing configuration. Read the product’s actual explanation of which positions are active and when; the phrase alone is not a complete rule.
